The first conclusive retrospective of Tadashi Sugimata, an artists who constantly renovating himself in the avant-garde art of Japan from the pre-war time to the present.

Mr. Sugimata was born in Oimachi in Shinagawa Ward, and spent his sensitive infancy and boyhood there and in Himeji Prefecture. Since his school days, he developed his own world employing Surrealistic techniques, and during the time of hardships of mid-war and post-war periods, he produced gDried Fountainh, gRed Snakeh which were excellent works to show his deep understanding of the society.

After that, he underwent the time of gInformelh and gradually he found his own style with the series, gTortoise shellh, in which hexagonal motifs were the major form, and counted as one of the main figures for some time. In the 70fs he challenged three-dimensional art and returned to the plane in the 80fs, and today he keeps making new approaches.

We think highly of the role he played in the pre-war and post-war art history. Therefore we arranged more than 60 works including oil paintings and watercolors so that we can command the full view of his development from the pre-war period to his recent activity.
