VIDEO, a New World --- Its PotentialNovember 3 - 25, 1992 @
@ Part 2: Home Videos Winners at Tokyo Video Festival and Video Poem Contest @ Part 3: New works and Projects IKIF Related Projects: gVideo Workshop for Childrenh by IKIF Performances and Talks by Shuntaro Tanikawa and Katsunori Kusunoki
Symposium: gThe Potential of Video as a Mediah by Nobuhiro Kawanaka,
Yoshimichi Morioka, and Arata Tani @ In present Japan video has fairly spread. Video software is quite common to our daily life thanks to the video rental systems, while video machines are very handy means of recording family life. Under these circumstances, the gvideo arth has been producing more complex and minute expressions experimenting a variety of computer effects. However, the hardware often tends to overwhelm the artists, and what came out are stereo-typed like technological specimen. While the video culture permeates our daily life, gthe video arth is trapped in a dead end. On the other hand, video as a medium, is deeply absorbed in the field of multi-media, making progress like hi-vision. This exhibition aims, not at realizing a general video art exhibition, but at trying to re-examine what made the video today --- what was selected and promoted, and what was discarded from such wide possibilities of video as a medium? First of all, in the gPart 1: Retrospectiveh, you would see early video works, which you could never have a chance to see, and video activities experimented by the so-called modern artists of the late sixties to the seventies when many trials and errors were made. Here we will recognize the spread of video expressions which we, today, has forgotten. In the gPart 2: Personal Videoh, you can see the prize winning works of video festivals, whose naive but sometimes wild expressions using the most intimate medium at hand would surprise the viewer, and also the videos the visitors made during the exhibition. You can find a unique and unsophisticated media of communication that surpasses the concept of art. In the gPart 3: New Works and Projectsh, some artists, who are not the gvideo artists by professionh, but the artists who are making a serious approach to the images and media art, will challenge new works or projects in the forms of workshops, or art works involving the viewers. May we come across with freer approach to the media, different from the existing ones. This exhibition intends to give stimuli to the blocked-up state of the video, and to re-consider its future, by exhibiting the works with a variety of new approaches as well as giving symposiums or workshops during the exhibition term. |
